Student of Harry G. Smith

JACK SIPE

Middletown, PA

Born April 13, 1939 in Royalton, Pennsylvania. Jack enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1957. His tour of duty was in Cuba until 1960. After his time in Cuba, he learned judo. Returning to Royalton from the Marines, Jack sought out further martial arts training. He felt the Marines were number one and that karate was number one. He asked a friend, who was working at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks, if they knew of any karate sensei in the area. He was referred to Sgt. Richard Keith, the Marine recruiter in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Jack studied with Richard Keith and Harry G. Smith from July 1961 until 1963. In 1964 Jack began his study with Tatsuo Shimabuku. Mr. Sipe had his first training session with Angi Uezu in 1967.

Following is a chronological listing of Sensei Sipes training:
1961-1963 Harry G. Smith and Richard Keith
1964 Tatsuo Shimabuku
1967 Angi Uezu
1971 Kichiro Shimabuku
1972, 1974, 1978, 1980, and 1984 Angi Uezu

Sensei Sipe was in full agreement with Master Shimabuku that "happy family" number 1, and karate number 2. This means that your personal life must be in good order before spending time in the dojo. Mr. Sipe, a devout Christian and lay minister of his own church, is the finest example of a gentleman, humble and honest, with impeccable integrity. These qualities have earned him great respect.

Following is a list of his promotions:
1962 1st degree black by Richard Keith
1965 2nd degree black by Tatsuo Shimabuku
1967 3rd degree black by Tatsuo Shimabuku
1969 4th degree black by Tatsuo Shimabuku
1971 5th degree black by Tatsuo Shimabuku
1974 6th degree black by Angi Uezu
1984 7th degree black by Angi Uezu

When Sensei Sipe retired from teaching in 1984 to devote full time to his Christian ministry, he left the following legacy: 13 dojo, 105 black belts, 1200 + members in his association.
